The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) Director-General, Joseph Osanipin, is urging collaboration among key players in the automotive industry. His goal? To streamline the manufacturing of Nigerian-made vehicles.
Osanipin believes this industry has the potential to create millions of Nigerian jobs, rivaling even the oil sector’s economic impact. He made these remarks during a recent visit to vehicle assembly plants in Lagos.
Enhancing Collaboration for Growth:
Throughout his tour, Osanipin emphasized the importance of synergy for industry growth. He proposed an “inter-ministerial approach” where stakeholders have a central point of contact to address challenges efficiently.
Human Capital Development: A Key Factor
Osanipin further highlighted the importance of developing a skilled workforce to revitalize the industry. He pointed out that many assemblers are already providing training programs, equipping young Nigerians with the expertise to build vehicles and convert gasoline-powered ones to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
CNG and the Road Ahead:
Osanipin noted Nigerians’ positive reception of CNG-powered vehicles. He expressed hope that this would attract more investors to the sector. The NADDC DG also highlighted industry stakeholders’ readiness to transition from Semi Knocked Down (SKD) to Completely Knocked Down (CKD) operations. This shift offers significant advantages, including increased job opportunities, a stronger economic contribution, and a higher percentage of locally-made components.
“We now know we have the capability,” Osanipin stressed. “All we need is to do some things differently” to develop a thriving Nigerian auto sector.
Industry Leaders Applaud Government Efforts
Industry captains echoed Osanipin’s sentiments, commending the efforts of the Bola Tinubu-led administration in propelling the automotive sector forward. They specifically praised the government’s support for the SKD to CKD transition and the CNG initiative.
A New Dawn for Nigerian Autos?
Anselm Ilekuba, CEO of Cedric Masters, believes the government is committed to these advancements. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the “well-thought-out” CNG initiative, labeling it “the new normal” for Nigeria. Ilekuba, who himself received training in CNG technology, emphasized its potential for job creation and new business opportunities.
