The Lagos State Government has unveiled a comprehensive traffic diversion plan in preparation for the emergency repairs of the Independence/Mekwen Bridge inbound Marina/CMS route. The repairs, scheduled to take place from Wednesday, March 19, to Monday, May 26, 2025, will necessitate the closure of specific road sections, including the stretch from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge. To minimize disruption, the government has mapped out alternative routes for motorists and assured the public that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will oversee traffic flow during the project. This article provides details of the diversion plan, alternative routes, and the government’s efforts to ensure smooth traffic management during the repairs.

The Lagos State Government has announced a detailed traffic diversion plan ahead of the emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge inbound Marina/CMS route. The repairs, which are scheduled to run from Wednesday, March 19, to Monday, May 26, 2025, will require the closure of certain road sections to facilitate the rehabilitation works. Specifically, the section of the road from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge down to Independence Bridge will be closed to vehicular movement. Additionally, the service lane at Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge inbound Independence Bridge will not be accessible to motorists. However, the service lane from Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe will remain open to traffic.

To ensure minimal disruption to commuters, the Lagos State Government has mapped out alternative routes for motorists navigating the affected areas. These routes have been carefully designed to provide viable options for travelers heading to various destinations, including Victoria Island, the Third Mainland Bridge, and Inner Marina/CMS.

For motorists heading to Victoria Island from Ahmadu Bello Way, the recommended route is Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound Akin Adesola Street, proceeding to Falomo Roundabout, and then linking Obafemi Awolowo Road to access Ring Road. This route will allow travelers to continue their journey with minimal inconvenience.

Motorists from Ahmadu Bello Way heading to the Third Mainland Bridge are advised to use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound Akin Adesola Street, then link Alfred Rewane Road to Osborne Road, and connect to Ring Road to reach their destinations. This alternative route ensures a smooth flow of traffic while avoiding the closed sections of the road.

For those traveling to Inner Marina and CMS from Ahmadu Bello Way, the diversion route involves using Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue inbound Akin Adesola Street to connect to Falomo Roundabout, then linking Obafemi Awolowo Road to access J.K. Randle Road/King George V Road. This route provides a seamless journey to the desired destination.

Motorists heading to Ahmadu Bello Way from Inner Marina/CMS will have through traffic access, ensuring that their travel plans remain unaffected by the repairs.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, has reassured Lagosians that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) will be on hand to manage traffic flow along the designated routes throughout the duration of the project. LASTMA officials will be deployed strategically to guide motorists and ensure compliance with the diversion plan, minimizing congestion and delays.

Mr. Osiyemi also urged motorists to exercise patience and cooperate with traffic management officials during the repair period. He emphasized that the partial closure of the road is a necessary measure to facilitate the rehabilitation works on the asphalt pavement, which is being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Works (Office of the Federal Controller, Lagos). The repairs are essential to maintaining the integrity of the road infrastructure and ensuring the safety of all road users.

The Lagos State Government’s proactive approach to traffic management during the repairs reflects its commitment to minimizing disruption and ensuring the smooth movement of vehicles and pedestrians. By providing clear alternative routes and deploying LASTMA officials to oversee traffic flow, the government aims to mitigate the impact of the road closure on commuters and businesses in the affected areas.

Conclusively, the emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge inbound Marina/CMS route are a critical step toward maintaining and improving Lagos State’s road infrastructure. The Lagos State Government’s comprehensive traffic diversion plan, coupled with the deployment of LASTMA officials, demonstrates its dedication to ensuring minimal disruption and maintaining order during the project. Motorists are encouraged to adhere to the diversion routes and cooperate with traffic management officials to ensure a smooth and hassle-free experience. As the repairs progress, the government remains committed to enhancing the safety and efficiency of Lagos State’s road network for the benefit of all residents and visitors.
