The 2024 Silverbird Man of the Year Award, one of Nigeria’s most prestigious honors, celebrated its 20th anniversary in grand style at the Eko Convention Centre in Lagos. The star-studded event, recognized individuals who have made remarkable contributions to national development. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti State as the 2024 Silverbird Man of the Year, a testament to his exceptional leadership and transformative impact on Ekiti State.
In his acceptance speech, Governor Oyebanji dedicated the award to God Almighty and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, crediting the President’s economic reforms for empowering state governments to drive impactful development projects. “The policies of President Tinubu have freed resources for sub-nationals to implement their programs, and we are extremely grateful,” he stated.
The ceremony also honored other outstanding personalities across various sectors. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Dr. Peter Mbah of Enugu State were jointly awarded the Governor of the Year Award for their remarkable achievements in governance. Dave Umahi, Nigeria’s Minister of Works, received the Minister of the Year Award for his relentless efforts in transforming the country’s infrastructure landscape.
The entertainment industry was well-represented, with veteran actor Richard Mofe-Damijo receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award for his decades-long contribution to Nigerian cinema. Music icon Don Jazzy was honored with the Extraordinary Achievement Award, while actors Chidi Mokeme and Toyin Abraham were celebrated with Trailblazer Awards for their groundbreaking work in Nollywood. Media mogul Ayo Animashaun and actress Folake Olowofoyeku were also recognized with Special Achievement Awards for their outstanding contributions to the entertainment and media industries.
The event paid tribute to late icons, including Chief Alex Akinyele, Professor Tam David-West, and Professor Dora Akinyuli, who were posthumously honored for their enduring legacies in public service and nation-building.
