Minister of Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali, has called for increased funding to sustain and expand Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure, as outlined in the 2025 budget proposal.
Addressing the Joint Committees at the National Assembly, Minister Alkali emphasized the critical role of transportation in national development, stating, “The nation’s progress is intricately tied to the efficiency and development of our transportation infrastructure.”
The Minister highlighted the successful rehabilitation of the narrow gauge railway from Lagos to Kano, now operational for freight movement, as a significant milestone in reviving economic activities. He also noted the commissioning of a 62km rail corridor from Port Harcourt to Aba, strengthening the link between Eastern Ports and the hinterland.
Furthermore, Minister Alkali emphasized the government’s commitment to transitioning to a cleaner energy economy, highlighting the distribution of 15 CNG-powered buses to transport unions as part of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas.
The Minister also announced the establishment of CNG Conversion and Training Centers in various states by the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, aimed at promoting the adoption of cleaner fuels.
Senator Mohammed Adamu Aliero, Chairman of the Joint Senate/House Committees on Land Transport, emphasized the crucial role of efficient transportation infrastructure in Nigeria’s progress, underscoring the need for further development of the nation’s rail system as an alternative to over-reliance on road networks.
The Minister’s request for increased funding underscores the government’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure and improving connectivity across the country.
