Telecom Operators Await NCC Guidelines on 50% Tariff Hike

0

Telecommunications operators are currently awaiting detailed guidelines from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on the recently approved 50% tariff increase.

The NCC is expected to issue a “determination document” outlining the specific frameworks, terms, and conditions for implementing the tariff adjustments. This document will serve as a crucial guide for operators in adhering to the new pricing structure.

The increase, approved on January 20th, allows operators to adjust tariffs within the established price bands of N6.40 to N50 per minute, as outlined in the NCC’s 2013 Cost Study.

While the 50% increase falls short of the 100% initially requested by operators, it aims to address the rising operational costs faced by the telecoms sector, including inflation, exchange rate fluctuations, and significant investments in network infrastructure.

The telecom industry, a vital pillar of Nigeria’s digital economy, has faced increasing financial strain due to these rising costs.

The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers (NATCOMS) has expressed strong opposition to the 50% tariff hike, demanding a reversal to a 10% increase. NATCOMS has issued an ultimatum to the NCC, threatening legal action if the demand is not met by January 29, 2025.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has also expressed concerns about the tariff hike. However, NATCOMS has urged the NLC to focus on its core mandate of protecting workers’ welfare and refrain from interfering in telecommunications issues.

The telecom industry awaits the release of the NCC’s determination document with keen interest as it will provide the necessary clarity and guidance for the implementation of the new tariff regime.
