Stella Okengwu Disputes Tax Claims, Seeks Probe into Estate Demolition by Minister

The Chief Executive Officer of Winhomes Global Services Limited, Stella Okengwu, has responded to allegations made by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, regarding her company’s tax obligations and the demolition of its estate in Lagos State.

During the inauguration of the Lekki-Epe Deep Seaport road last week, Umahi accused Winhomes of failing to meet its tax responsibilities. He questioned why the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) had not pursued the company, despite claims that it invested ₦250 million in a project. The minister also referenced a video allegedly showing that no structures existed on the company’s land prior to development.

In a recent video response, Okengwu refuted the allegations, emphasizing that her company has fully complied with its tax obligations. She also called for a presidential investigation into the demolition of the company’s estate located in Okun Ajah, Lagos State. According to Okengwu, the property was destroyed despite possessing all necessary legal approvals and meeting tax requirements.

“We have invested over ₦250 million in the estate and have consistently complied with our tax obligations,” she stated. “We are committed to supporting national development, but this must be done through due process and respect for the rule of law.”

Okengwu explained that the estate is situated between Chainage 16 and 18 of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, outside the officially designated right-of-way, as confirmed by valid survey records and government approvals in the company’s possession.

She expressed deep concern over the manner in which the demolition was carried out, stating that her company possessed all required documentation prior to the action.

“Our concern is not just about the demolition itself, but about the process that led to it,” she said. “We believe it is crucial for the government to demonstrate fairness, especially to Nigerians investing in the country’s development.”

Okengwu urged relevant authorities to independently verify the estate’s legal standing and location in relation to the ongoing highway project. She also called on law enforcement agencies to investigate disturbances reported during the demolition operation.

In an appeal to President Bola Tinubu, Okengwu requested a thorough and independent review of the incident, as well as broader scrutiny of the implementation of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project.

“We ask Mr. President to intervene, not only to review this specific incident but also to ensure that future developments respect legal ownership and foster investor confidence,” she said.

The CEO’s response highlights growing concerns about transparency and adherence to due process in infrastructure projects, particularly as the government seeks to attract private investment to drive economic growth.
