Ibukunoluwa Awosika, the former Chairperson of FirstBank, has delivered a powerful message to female accountants, urging them to challenge the status quo and strive for leadership positions within their workplaces and professional organizations.
Speaking at the 2024 Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) Day with the theme of “Shattering Glass Ceiling,” Awosika emphasized the importance of intentionality, wisdom, and courage in overcoming barriers that hinder women’s advancement to the boardroom. She encouraged female accountants to demonstrate their competence and actively seek leadership roles within the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) and other professional bodies.
Awosika acknowledged the challenges women face in competing with male counterparts who have long been positioned for leadership roles. She advised female accountants to approach their careers exceptionally, demonstrating hard work, smart decision-making, and staying updated with current trends. She also highlighted the unique advantages women bring to the accounting profession, such as their integrity and fairness.
The Grand Patron of SWAN, Onome Adewuyi, echoed Awosika’s message, stressing the importance of early retirement planning for women accountants. She encouraged them to explore opportunities in the money market, capital market, and real estate to build generational wealth.
Awosika’s advice serves as a powerful reminder of the need for greater gender diversity in leadership positions, particularly within the accounting profession.
