The Project Management Institute (PMI) and the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) have formed a groundbreaking partnership to enhance project governance, implementation, and future-ready skills development within ITU’s global initiatives. This collaboration is built on a shared vision to deliver measurable outcomes across key strategic priorities, with a particular emphasis on Africa.¹
The partnership aims to facilitate policy dialogues, foster knowledge exchange among experts, and develop capacity and future-ready skills within communities. By doing so, it seeks to address connectivity gaps, unlock opportunities for millions, and drive inclusive and sustainable development.
George Asamani, Managing Director for Sub-Saharan Africa at PMI, emphasized the critical role of effective project management in addressing Africa’s unique challenges, particularly the significant connectivity gaps across the region. He noted that the partnership with ITU will play a pivotal role in equipping stakeholders with the necessary tools and expertise to deliver impactful projects that drive meaningful change across Africa.
The collaboration also directly advances several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Quality Education, Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Reduced Inequalities. By strengthening project governance, enhancing implementation, and fostering future-ready skills development, the partnership will contribute to accelerated progress toward these goals.
Dr. Cosmas Zavazava, Director of the Telecommunication Development Bureau at ITU, highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating that it reinforces ITU’s efforts to connect the world by fostering digital inclusion and bridging connectivity gaps.
The agreement, which will remain in force through 2025, reflects a long-term commitment to delivering impactful results and underscores the importance of cross-sector collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals. With strategic investments and effective governance, this partnership is poised to bridge Africa’s digital divide, delivering transformative projects that expand access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities.
