The Nigerian Institute of Space Engineers (NISEng) has announced the conferment of its prestigious fellowship award on Air Vice Marshal Nkem Aguiyi, Chief of Defence Transformation and Innovation at the Defence Headquarters, in recognition of his transformative contributions to Nigeria’s space and satellite advancements.

The decision was confirmed in an official statement signed by the Institute’s National President, Engr. Babalola Sunday, and obtained by our correspondent on Monday.

The fellowship, known as the NISEng Fellowship Award, is being conferred on Aguiyi in acknowledgment of his sustained dedication, visionary leadership, and pioneering role in advancing space engineering and satellite communications in Nigeria.

Highlighting his legacy, the institute praised Aguiyi as a foundational figure in Nigeria’s space journey—often referred to as the “Christopher Columbus” of the Nigerian Armed Forces within the nation’s space ecosystem. He was instrumental in making Nigeria’s early satellite communication initiatives operational, which later evolved into the Nigerian Communications Satellite (NIGCOMSAT) programme.

“AVM Aguiyi’s early involvement laid the groundwork for what we now celebrate in Nigeria’s space sector,” the statement noted. “His role in establishing the Defence Space Administration, leading the Nigerian Air Force’s satellite communications team, and participating in the Know-How Technology Transfer programme at the China Academy of Space Technology were pivotal in transitioning Nigeria from a passive observer to an active player in space technology.”

The Nigerian Institute of Space Engineers emphasized that the selection followed a rigorous evaluation of individuals who have significantly shaped the nation’s space engineering landscape. The Executive Committee unanimously concluded that Aguiyi’s contributions merited the highest professional recognition the institute can bestow.

The official citation read: “On behalf of the Executive Committee and Members of the Nigerian Institution of Space Engineers, I am pleased to convey that you have been found worthy to receive the NISEng Fellowship Award. This honour is in recognition of your outstanding contributions, consistency, and unwavering commitment to the growth of space engineering in Nigeria.”

The award will be formally presented during the 2025 Annual Distinguished Lecture in honour of Brigadier General (rtd.) M.O. Agu, FNSE, scheduled for October 8, 2025, in Abuja.

In a related publication, the institute reiterated the importance of honouring trailblazers like Aguiyi, stating: “As we push the frontiers of Nigeria’s space capabilities, learning from those who pioneered the path is not just valuable—it is essential. Their insights inspire excellence, guide innovation, and strengthen our collective mission to position Nigeria as a key player in the global space community.”
