Nigeria has taken a bold step towards leading Africa’s digital trade revolution with the launch of a comprehensive strategy. This initiative aligns with the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) framework and is a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“Nigeria’s unique position allows us to spearhead the continent’s technological transformation,” said Vice President Kashim Shettima in a statement. He outlined the strategy’s key components:

  • Implementing AfCFTA’s Digital Trade Protocol: This ensures seamless trade within the free trade agreement.
  • Developing Technical Talent Hubs: Building a skilled workforce is crucial for success in the digital economy.
  • Enhancing Digital Infrastructure Investments: Expanding internet access and infrastructure is essential for facilitating digital trade.
  • Promoting Innovation and Entrepreneurship: Fostering a culture of innovation will drive growth in the digital trade sector.

During a stakeholders summit titled “Digital Trade in Africa: The Renewed Hope Strategy,” Shettima emphasized the importance of synergy between the public and private sectors. The government, he assured, remains committed to investing in digital infrastructure and developing human capital.

Bosun Tijjani, Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, highlighted significant investments in the digital trade protocol. He mentioned initiatives like the 3 Million Technical Talent program and the data protection policy, which aim to equip Nigeria’s youth for the digital future.

Tijjani emphasized the critical role of technology in facilitating trade across Africa. He stressed that collaboration and networking, enabled by digital technology, are essential for unlocking the potential of the AfCFTA’s single market. Nigeria’s leadership in digital trade development is a positive step towards a more connected and prosperous Africa.
