Nigeria has urged for a strengthened partnership with the United Nations to address the pressing challenges of sustainable agricultural development and food security. During a recent visit by the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Dr. Amina Mohammed, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, highlighted the crucial role of the UN in supporting Nigeria’s development endeavors.

Kyari emphasized the alignment of the ministry’s mandate with President Bola Tinubu’s 8-point agenda, prioritizing food security, economic growth, job creation, and poverty eradication. He acknowledged the longstanding collaboration between Nigeria and various UN organizations, including the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Nigeria has actively contributed to these organizations and sought their support for sustainable interventions in the agriculture sector. The ministry is particularly interested in additional support for the Value Chain Development Program and Value Chain North, aimed at increasing food production in northern Nigeria.

Dr. Amina Mohammed recognized the complex challenges facing Nigeria, including domestic issues and global disruptions. She emphasized the UN’s commitment to supporting displaced populations and addressing security concerns while prioritizing food security.

The food security crisis in Nigeria has been exacerbated by rising commodity prices, making it difficult for many Nigerians to afford basic necessities. While resolving this crisis will require time and resources, Mohammed expressed optimism about Nigeria’s approach and the potential for effective management with adequate support.

Nigeria’s partnership with the United Nations is crucial for achieving sustainable agricultural development and food security. By strengthening this collaboration, Nigeria can leverage the expertise and resources of international organizations to address the pressing challenges facing its agriculture sector and ensure a more prosperous and food-secure future for its people.
