The High Commissioner of the Republic of Namibia to Nigeria, Ambassador Humphrey Gieseb, has expressed his country’s interest in partnering with Nigeria to grow the country’s elephant population.

During a virtual panel discussion on harnessing the potentials of tourism for peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and economic development in the Niger Delta, Ambassador Gieseb shared Namibia’s experience in successfully increasing its elephant population from 7,000 to 21,000 through dedicated protection and management schemes. He offered to collaborate with Nigeria to implement similar strategies and assist in growing Nigeria’s elephant population, which currently stands at around 400.

The Co-Convener of the virtual conference, Tamunotonye Pamela, highlighted the potential of tourism in the Niger Delta, particularly in Yenagoa, despite receiving limited media coverage. She emphasized the need for collaborative partnerships between government agencies, non-profit organizations, private sector companies, and other stakeholders to drive the development of tourism in the region.

Justina Ovat, a hospitality expert in Calabar, emphasized the three fundamental elements necessary for successful tourism: means of transportation, static elements (hotels, restaurants, etc.), and compelling reasons for travel. She noted that the Niger Delta region possesses all of these elements, making it an attractive destination for tourists.
