Naira Decline Impacts Internet Consumption in Nigeria

0

Nigeria’s internet consumption experienced a slight decline in September 2024, marking the first dip since February. This decrease can be attributed to several factors, including a recent SIM card verification exercise that led to a significant drop in active subscriptions.

The four major telecom operators—MTN, Airtel, Globacom, and 9mobile—saw a combined loss of over 64 million subscribers due to the verification process. This impacted overall internet usage, as a smaller subscriber base translates to lower data consumption.

Despite this setback, 5G adoption continues to grow steadily, reaching 2.19% penetration in September. This indicates a growing interest in high-speed internet services among Nigerian consumers.

As the telecom industry adapts to these changes, it is expected that future growth will depend on factors such as economic stability, increased affordability, and the expansion of network infrastructure.
