Maritime Workers Union Raises Concerns Over Deteriorating Port Infrastructure

The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has raised serious concerns about the safety of port workers due to the deteriorating condition of quay aprons at Nigerian ports.

In a statement that was recently released , MWUN President-General Adewale Adeyanju highlighted the significant safety risks posed by the sinking and decaying quay aprons, which are crucial for port operations.

“The lives of the workers are no longer safe because of the quay aprons, which are sinking, decaying. And most of the cranes they are using, some of them are 200 tons, 500 tons on a quay apron that is sinking, already going. So, tell me about the safety of the workers of that place,” Adeyanju said.

He further emphasized that the safety of all port stakeholders, including dockworkers, NPA officials, and port users, is compromised by the deteriorating infrastructure.

While acknowledging the recent appointment of Dr. Abubakar Dantsoho as the new Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Adeyanju expressed confidence in the new leadership’s ability to address these critical infrastructure issues.

“I believe he is coming; he will look at his book to know if they have awarded the contract to a contractor that will ensure that the quay aprons are getting a facelift,” he stated.

The MWUN’s concerns underscore the urgent need for significant investment in port infrastructure maintenance and upgrades to ensure the safety and efficiency of port operations in Nigeria.
