Maritime Transport Dominates Nigerian Exports in Q2 2024

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has released its Foreign Trade in Goods Statistics report for the second quarter of 2024 (Q2’24), revealing that maritime transport accounted for 99.1 percent of all exported goods during the period.

The total value of goods shipped through maritime transport in Q2’24 amounted to N19.25 trillion. While air and road transport accounted for a small portion of exports, maritime transport remained the dominant mode of transportation for Nigerian exports.

On the import side, maritime transport accounted for 94.94 percent of the total value of imports, valued at N11.8 trillion. Air transport accounted for 4.66 percent (N531.38 billion), and road transport accounted for 0.40 percent (N49.97 billion).

Regarding export trade transactions by Custom Ports and post in Q1 2024, Apapa Port recorded the highest value of goods shipped, with N18.1 billion representing 93.4 percent of total exports. Tin Can Island Port followed with N791.2 billion, accounting for 4.07 percent of total exports.

In terms of imports, Apapa Port also recorded the highest value of transactions, with N7.6 trillion representing 61 percent of total imports. Tin Can Island Port accounted for N1.4 trillion (11.43 percent), while Port-Harcourt (Onne) recorded N1.01 trillion (8.10 percent).

Regarding Nigeria’s trade with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) countries in Q2’24, exports totaled N1.7 trillion, while imports amounted to N166.4 billion.
