Jannik Sinner solidified his position as the world’s top tennis player, securing a dominant 6-4, 7-5 victory over Tomas Machac in the Shanghai Masters semifinals on Saturday. This triumph not only propelled him into the tournament’s final but also guaranteed his year-end No. 1 ranking, making him the first Italian to achieve this feat.
Sinner will now face either Novak Djokovic, a four-time Shanghai champion, or Taylor Fritz in Sunday’s title match. The 23-year-old Italian has held the top spot since June and has consistently showcased his exceptional skills throughout the season.
“It was only a dream just to become number one… Now finishing (the year there) is also a different feeling,” Sinner remarked after his victory. “It’s a good feeling. I’m very happy to achieve this. It was an amazing season for me and it’s not finished yet.”
The match against Machac was a thrilling encounter, with the Czech breaking serve in the opening game. However, Sinner’s composure and skill allowed him to break back and eventually claim the first set. The second set remained on serve until the 12th game, where Sinner’s powerful shot sealed his victory and secured his place in the final.
“It was very tough… he is playing with so much confidence and he can hit a ball really hard, and is serving very well,”
Sinner said of Machac. “I tried to stay there mentally… I’m very happy about how I’m fighting at the moment.” Sources and related content
