Ojeikere Akhadelor, a migration studies expert, has recommended increased language and vocational training to effectively integrate refugees into Nigerian society.
In his research titled “The Impact of Refugee Resettlement Programmes on Local Communities in America: A Case Study of New York City,” Akhadelor highlighted key challenges in refugee integration, including housing shortages, overburdened public services, and the influence of negative community perceptions.
While acknowledging the economic contributions of refugees, such as filling essential jobs and stimulating local markets, Akhadelor emphasized the need for targeted strategies to address the challenges faced by refugees in urban centers like Lagos.
“The systemic barriers refugees face are universal,” Akhadelor noted, drawing parallels between the challenges observed in New York City and the potential challenges in Nigerian cities.
To facilitate successful integration, Akhadelor proposed several key recommendations:
- Vocational and Language Training: Equipping refugees with job-ready skills and language proficiency is crucial for their economic self-sufficiency and successful integration into the workforce.
- Community-Based Initiatives: Fostering trust and intercultural dialogue through community-based initiatives is essential for building social cohesion and equitable resource distribution.
- Policy Development: Implementing policies that ensure fair access to housing, healthcare, and education for both refugees and host communities is critical for long-term success.
Akhadelor called for collaboration among policymakers, non-governmental organizations, and communities to address these challenges and create an inclusive environment for refugees in Nigeria.
By implementing these recommendations, Nigeria can effectively integrate refugees into society, harnessing their potential to contribute to economic growth and cultural diversity.
