The International Maritime Institute of Nigeria (IMION) has launched an exclusive Blue Economy media course designed specifically for journalists and media executives, reinforcing its commitment to expanding national awareness and engagement with Nigeria’s maritime potential.

In a statement released on Tuesday, IMION—the research and training arm of the Nigerian Navy—announced the upcoming executive training programme, set for later in July. The course will bring together leading maritime journalists, media leaders, and communication professionals for an intensive knowledge-building session on the opportunities and challenges within Nigeria’s Blue Economy.

Renowned for delivering international-standard training, IMION has assembled a team of eminent maritime experts to lead the high-impact sessions. The Blue Economy media course aims to deepen understanding of Nigeria’s maritime domain, including fisheries, offshore energy, port infrastructure, coastal tourism, and marine conservation.

“The media plays a vital role in shaping public discourse, influencing policy decisions, and driving sustainable development in the Blue Economy ecosystem,” the statement read. “This executive course is designed to equip participants with advanced knowledge and strategic insights to improve reporting, advocacy, and policy engagement in the maritime sector.”

By targeting top-tier media practitioners, IMION recognizes journalists as key stakeholders in advancing responsible and inclusive development of Nigeria’s ocean-based economy. The institute emphasized that informed and accurate media coverage can accelerate investment, strengthen regulatory oversight, and promote public support for maritime initiatives.

The programme will also foster stronger collaboration between the media and maritime industry players, build capacity for investigative reporting, and enhance the media’s role in holding institutions accountable.

IMION noted that as Nigeria seeks to unlock the economic value of its coastal and marine resources, initiatives like the Blue Economy media course reflect a growing commitment to data-driven, inclusive, and sustainable development strategies.

With over 850 kilometers of coastline and vast offshore resources, Nigeria stands to gain significantly from a well-managed Blue Economy. This training marks a strategic step toward ensuring that the narrative around maritime development is not only accurate but also forward-looking and impactful.
