The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has underscored the crucial role of the judiciary in maintaining a robust tax system in Nigeria. The FIRS emphasized the importance of the judiciary’s integrity and cooperation in ensuring the effectiveness of the tax system.

Dr. Zacch Adedeji, the Executive Chairman of the FIRS, represented by Muhammad Abubakar, the Coordinating Director of Services Support Group, made this statement at the opening ceremony of the High Impact Interactive Conference with Justices and Judges, organized by the FIRS in partnership with the National Judicial Institute.

Adedeji highlighted the judiciary’s role as the guardian of justice and fairness in society. He emphasized the importance of the judiciary’s role in interpreting tax laws, adjudicating disputes, and fostering trust in the tax system. By upholding the rule of law and delivering fair judgments, the judiciary can encourage citizens and businesses to fulfill their tax obligations.

The FIRS urged the judiciary to remain committed to delivering fair and accountable judgments. Muhammad Abubakar reiterated the FIRS’ target of achieving N19.4 trillion in revenue by the end of the year. He expressed confidence in the FIRS’ ability to meet this target, citing the ongoing efforts to strengthen the tax system.

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, emphasized the importance of thoroughness in presenting cases before the court. She noted that while the conference aims to build capacity and understanding of sector-specific issues like taxation, it does not replace the duty of relevant agencies to diligently perform their responsibilities.

Justice Kekere-Ekun highlighted the need for continuous judicial education on specialized matters like taxation and urged judges to maintain consistency in their rulings to promote transparency and fairness within the system.

The collaboration between the judiciary and tax administrators demonstrates a shared commitment to national progress. By working together, these institutions can contribute to a more efficient and equitable tax system in Nigeria.
