Fife Famurewa, founder and president of the Sports for Special Needs Club at Kinkaid, is spearheading efforts to bridge the gap between Nigeria’s medical community and global advancements in assistive technology. With a passion for engineering devices that aid individuals with disabilities, Famurewa is working to introduce life-changing technologies to Nigeria, starting with 3D-printed tactile symbols and communication boards for children with autism.

Fife Famurewa, a high school student from Houston, Texas, and founder of the Sports for Special Needs Club at Kinkaid, is on a mission to connect Nigeria’s medical community with cutting-edge advancements in assistive technology. As an active member of the Easter Seals Houston Chapter, a nonprofit organisation providing disability services to military families and individuals in need, Famurewa has developed a deep interest in how engineering devices can be used to improve the lives of people with disabilities.

In a statement , Famurewa shared her excitement about an initiative that combines her passion and experiences. “Through this research and interview, I hope to connect Nigeria’s medical community with global advancements in assistive technology,” she said. “With the support of the Texas Technology Access Program, I dropped off various 3D-printed tactile symbols and communication boards at schools for children with autism in Nigeria to help with their ability to communicate.”

Famurewa’s journey into assistive technology began during her involvement with the Easter Seals Houston Chapter, where she visited a centre dedicated to assistive technology. This experience, coupled with her personal research, inspired her to bring knowledge about these transformative technologies to Nigeria. She has already collaborated with two private schools in Lagos—one in Ketu and the other in Opebi—to implement her initiatives.

The 3D-printed tactile symbols and communication boards are designed to enhance communication for children with autism, providing them with tools to express themselves more effectively. Famurewa’s efforts highlight the potential of assistive technology to address critical needs in Nigeria’s special education and healthcare sectors.

Her work is not only a testament to her dedication but also a call to action for Nigeria’s medical and educational communities to embrace global innovations in assistive technology. By fostering collaboration between local institutions and international organisations, Famurewa aims to create a more inclusive environment for individuals with disabilities in Nigeria.

Fife Famurewa’s initiative to introduce assistive technology to Nigeria’s medical and educational systems marks a significant step toward improving the lives of individuals with disabilities. Her efforts to connect Nigeria with global advancements in this field underscore the importance of innovation and collaboration in addressing the unique challenges faced by people with special needs. As Famurewa continues to champion this cause, her work promises to inspire further progress in assistive technology adoption across Nigeria.
