The Africa Cup of Nations threw up another dramatic twist on Sunday evening as Guinea snatched a last-gasp 1-0 victory over 10-man Equatorial Guinea in a pulsating encounter.

First Half Frustration:

The opening half was a tale of frustration for both teams. Despite aggressive play, neither side managed a single shot on target, while Guinea’s Julian Jeanvier picked up a yellow card in the 41st minute. The referee’s whistle brought a welcome end to a goalless and somewhat scrappy first 45.

Second Half Drama:

The second half exploded into drama from the off. Federico Bikoro’s dismissal for Equatorial Guinea in the 56th minute seemed to hand Guinea the advantage. However, the Nzalang Nacional refused to surrender, peppering the Guinea defense with attacks. Their persistence paid off when they were awarded a penalty after a VAR intervention. But the usually reliable Emilio Nsue skied the spot-kick, sending shockwaves through the Nzalang Nacional camp.

Bayo’s Late Blow:

With Equatorial Guinea pushing for a winner, it was Guinea who struck the decisive blow in the dying moments. Substitute Mohamed Bayo rose highest to head home a pinpoint cross in the 98th minute, sending the Syli National into raptures and leaving Equatorial Guinea heartbroken.
