The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has issued a stern warning to its customers against falling victim to fraudulent activities related to meter procurement and other services. The company emphasized that all payments should be made directly through official and approved channels.
The warning comes in the wake of the arrest and arraignment of one Mufutau Bello, who was accused of defrauding a customer in the Ojo Business District of Lagos. Bello, posing as an EKEDC staff, allegedly obtained N760,375 from the customer under false pretenses for the purchase of seven prepaid meters.
EKEDC’s spokesman, Babatunde Lasaki, condemned the act as criminal and unfortunate, especially during these challenging economic times. He urged customers to be vigilant and avoid seeking assistance from unauthorized individuals or agents.
Lasaki advised customers to utilize the company’s official channels for all payments and inquiries, including customer service lines, social media platforms, and physical office locations. He emphasized that there should be no form of gratification to EKEDC staff, as all employees are on the company’s payroll to serve customers.
Lasaki also warned customers against engaging in illegal activities, such as tampering with electric wires or illegal reconnections. He emphasized that EKEDC will not tolerate such actions and will take legal action against offenders.
EKEDC encouraged customers to utilize the available mechanisms to seek amicable solutions to their issues rather than resorting to self-help.
