In a landmark move that could reshape the future of learning across Africa, the AI-powered education tool Chidi has officially launched in Rwanda as part of a transformative partnership between ALX, Anthropic, and the Rwandan government. Designed as an intelligent tutor and teaching assistant, Chidi AI learning companion Rwanda is now being piloted in higher education institutions and public service training programs—ushering in a new era of accessible, adaptive, and future-ready education on the continent.
Unlike traditional digital learning platforms, Chidi leverages Anthropic’s advanced Claude large language model to engage learners in dynamic dialogue, guide problem-solving, support lesson planning, and foster critical thinking—functions that go far beyond simple Q&A. For students, it acts as a 24/7 mentor; for educators, it serves as a co-pilot, reducing administrative burdens like grading and curriculum design while enhancing personalization and engagement.
The rollout follows a successful Phase 1 deployment across ALX’s pan-African learner network, where Chidi facilitated over 1,100 conversations and 4,000 chats in just two days—demonstrating immediate demand for scalable, intelligent learning support.
Now, in Phase 2, the Chidi AI learning companion Rwanda initiative expands into the heart of the country’s public sector. Up to 2,000 university lecturers and civil servants will participate in ALX’s AI Career Essentials program, gaining hands-on experience with generative AI tools including Claude Pro and Claude Code. Graduates will retain one year of premium access, ensuring sustained AI literacy within classrooms and government agencies.
Fred Swaniker, Founder and CEO of ALX, emphasized the broader vision: “This isn’t just about technology—it’s about equity. We’re ensuring that African youth aren’t just consumers of AI but creators, leaders, and innovators. With Chidi, we’re building a generation that learns, thinks, and leads at the speed of the digital age.”
The initiative supports Rwanda’s Vision 2050 and National Strategy for Transformation, both of which prioritize human capital development and digital fluency. While the government is not providing financial investment, its role in enabling policy frameworks, institutional access, and national coordination is critical to scaling impact.
Joseph Nsengimana, Rwanda’s Minister of Education, said: “Chidi empowers our teachers and ignites curiosity in our students. It frees up time for deeper learning and helps us prepare a workforce ready for the challenges of tomorrow.”
Paula Ingabire, Minister of ICT & Innovation, added: “By introducing AI training for civil servants, we are future-proofing our governance systems and ensuring responsible adoption of emerging technologies.”
Elizabeth Kelly, Head of Beneficial Deployments at Anthropic, highlighted the ethical foundation of the project: “We believe powerful AI should be safe, responsible, and accessible to all. Through this collaboration, we’re making sure Claude strengthens education in ways that respect local context and empower communities.”
A joint working group from ALX, Anthropic, and Rwandan ministries will evaluate the pilot’s outcomes to inform national AI-in-education policies. Future plans include expanding Chidi to secondary schools (Chidi for Schools), developing localized language models in Kinyarwanda and French, and integrating AI training into national teacher certification programs.
