The Accountant-General of the Federation, Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, has called on state governments to halt financial leakages and adopt prudent financial management practices to enhance revenue generation. During a working visit to the Federal Pay Office in Kano, Madein emphasized the importance of accountability, efficiency, and compliance with federal financial reforms to strengthen revenue collection and reduce unpaid liabilities.
Dr Oluwatoyin Madein, the Accountant-General of the Federation, has urged state governments to address financial leakages and implement prudent financial management practices to boost revenue generation. Madein made this appeal during her nationwide tour, which included a visit to the Federal Pay Office (FPO) in Kano, where she engaged with Federal Pay Officers to discuss strategies for improving public financial management.
In a statement issued by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, Bawa Mokwa, Madein stressed the need for accountability and efficiency in managing public funds. She called on Federal Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) across states to fully comply with the Federal Government’s financial reform initiatives.
“Compliance with these reforms will strengthen revenue collection at the state level while reducing the financial burden on the Federal Government due to unpaid liabilities,” Madein stated.
She also revealed that her office is in the process of establishing an enterprise concept management system, which will digitize all financial activities, including those conducted at Federal Pay Offices nationwide. This system aims to enhance transparency and ensure real-time financial reporting.
“The use of manual processes in carrying out financial activities will soon be over. The use of modern technology in the accounting profession is key and vital,” Madein said. She emphasized that the digitization of financial operations would improve efficiency and accountability across all levels of government.
Madein further urged Federal Pay Officers to embrace the performance management system, which will replace the Annual Performance Evaluation Report. The new system, she explained, will involve all staff and serve as an objective measure of management performance, ensuring alignment with the government’s financial prudence policies.
She also encouraged Federal Pay Officers to enhance their digital literacy skills, noting that computer proficiency is now essential for effective financial management in the public sector.
In his remarks, Aminu Umar, Chairman of the North West Zone Committee of FPOs, commended Madein for her visit, describing it as a significant milestone. He noted that the engagement would set a precedent for future leadership in the Accountant-General’s Office.
Dr Oluwatoyin Madein’s call for states to curb financial leakages and adopt prudent financial management practices underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to improving revenue generation and accountability. By embracing digital transformation and compliance with financial reforms, state governments can strengthen their revenue collection processes and reduce the burden of unpaid liabilities on the Federal Government. This initiative marks a critical step toward achieving transparency, efficiency, and sustainable economic growth in Nigeria.
